Top 10 Talks of 2015

This year I have had the pleasure of taking time out to listen and watching so many different talks. I have also been lucky enough to attend some of those talks in first person. Now, more than any other time in human history we able to turn our attention to such good content through the touch of a button.

I wanted to share what I think have been the top 10 talks of 2015. The talks listed below are based mostly around the web design and development industry, however I have also added talks about general business, idea creation and innovation.

Not all videos are from conference events, some are podcast discussions, some are small meetings, but all are my favourite, all are my top 10 talks of 2015.

So without further ado, here are my top 10 talks of 2015;

  1. Mike Monteiro - How Designers Destroyed the world - A video certainly not for the faint hearted. Mike explores the responsibilities of designers live on stage at An Event Apart, Orlando 2015. - https://vimeo.com/122022963
  2. Ethan Marcotte - Laziness of In the time of Responsive Design – We all know how Ethan’s talk went down with everyone in the web industry back in 2011. His talk A Dao of Flexibility at An Event Apart blow the industry away. In this talk Ethan talks about Laziness in the time of Responsive Web Design.
  3. Elon Musk – An Interview at TED 2015 - Engineer, Inventor, Investor and now the person in the spot light known for taking on the auto industry. Elon speaks about the sustainability of transport and explains his ideas and innovation with Tesla Motors.
  4. Luke Wroblewski - Screen Time - Believe it or not but responsive design has been around for over half a decade now. Luke takes us into the world of what it means for future web and interaction designers. How do we accommodate for people moving between different screen sizes from desktop, to phones, to tablets to TV’s. - https://vimeo.com/126528935
  5. Paul Lewis - Making a Silky Smooth Web - Paul Lewis of Google takes us through this fantastic presentation and talk on how to get the best performance from your website. Performance has become the thing of 2015 even Google have made an attempt to make it part of their own algorithm.
  6. Jonathan Snook – CSS Workflow from the ground up - Author of the very successful book SMACSS (Scalable and Modular Architecture) Jonathan takes us through a fantastic talk about how we can write scalable and modular CSS for continual growing projects that are easier to audit and maintain
  7. The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast – Joe Rogan & Dr Rhonda Patrick Discussion - A mind blowing discussion from the JRE podcast with Dr Rhonda Patrick. On this almost 3 hour podcast Joe and Rhonda speak about health, nutrition and every day research that Rhonda Carries out. This podcast stood out to me as a wake up call of what I should be eating, how I should be exercising and generally how I can make my life a little better by making small changes to my life style.   8. Daniel Levitin - How to Stay Calm When You Know You'll Be Stressed - Dealing with stress. It is a problem I have dealt with for years after opening my own business. Meeting deadlines, scheduling work, juggling projects and keeping work flowing in. This talk by Daniel Levitin outlines ways we can avoid getting stressed using his researched methods.
  9. Erika Hall - Just enough Research - Following up from Erika’s book in 2014 this talk displays some great advice on how you can be more successful in your design and development process using effective and efficient techniques.   10. Jeffrey Zeldman - Understanding Web Design - The king of web standards delivers this fantastic 1 hour talk on how we can define the essence of our profession and how we can create the career deserve. - https://vimeo.com/128619771.

Closing Thoughts

As mentioned previously it was really difficult to get my choices down to just 10 talks. All of these talks represent my interests. Technology, Web Development, Health, Fitness and Automotive industry.
